Choosing the right robot kit by age
A simple age-by-age guide to motor skills, building difficulty and coding concepts, from first robots to independent projects.

For younger children, choose robots with large pieces, direct controls and quick cause-and-effect. Pressing a button and seeing an immediate movement helps connect an action with its result.
Children in the early primary years can begin following visual sequences and assembling a small number of parts. Picture-led instructions and block-based commands keep the focus on ideas rather than reading ability.
Older children are ready for longer builds, sensors and projects that can be changed after the first success. Look for kits that invite them to modify speed, direction or behaviour instead of simply copying one finished model.
Whichever level you choose, leave space for independent discovery. The most valuable moment is often not finishing the instructions, but asking, "What happens if I change this?"
